Back up Camera Problems
Back up Camera Problems
Hey everyone,
I have a back up camera on my 2005 F-150 connected to my Pioneer AVH 3200BT head unit. Recently, it has been temperamental with when it decides to work... Somedays it works flawlessly and others (like the past 2 weeks or so) it has been just a black screen. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem? It still says "Image on screen may be reversed", but just with no image...
I plan on buying a small bass boat soon and it would help to be able to see the ball when I am backing up.
Thanks for any advice,
-Barrett

Sounds like this is an all after market install.
If so, check what powers the camera when it is in reverse, the description sounds like the camera is not being turned on.
Could be it was spliced into the trailer tow adapter reversing circuit, so you might need to start there ( unless you installed it and know where you got the reverse signal from to check it ).
Next would be to make sure the cable to the camera is not corroded or damaged.
- RCA cables just plugged in, or was it an actual weather pack connector that is sealed ?

Hey Sscully,
It is completely aftermarket. However I am not too sure where it is tied in because I didn't do the install myself. The camera is still plugged in.
What I find really odd is when it decides to not work if I go hose off the rear end of the truck it starts working again. A few days ago I was driving through a storm and it kicked back into working while I was on the road. So somehow water hitting something down below gets it to work again.

Sounds like a bad splice at the trailer tow reversing ckt.
If you go under there, and look for a wire leaving the camera going to the factory harness you might find it.
Then again the installer might have done a scotch lock behind one fo the tail lamps into the truck's reverse light ( not the best idea, but it is not that much of a load ).
pull both rear tail lamps, and start there would be my suggestion.
Could also be the ground to the camera, in general check for the wires ( not the video signal ) leaving the camera to see how the splice is doing.
