adding electronic trailer brake controller
adding electronic trailer brake controller
I just purchased a 2000 F150 sc 5.4 with tranny cooler that did not have the factory tow package. The car trailer that I am going to tow occasionally has a 7 pin connector with brakes.
1) Is it difficult to install an electronic controller, any recommendations on brands?
2) Is there any chance that the wiring is on the frame even if it doesn't have a tow package?

do you have the 5 pin flat blade connector on the bumper?
My friends 99 had that and we ordered the 7 pin kit from ford and you can just follow that harness back and unplug the connector up on the dr side frame rail (near the spare tire, but on the frame rail)and plug the new 7 pin harness into that and run it where the 5 pin was, there will also be a ground eye.

electric controlers are easy as long as you can find the proper wires (old ones used to tap into the brake lines and then convert that to an electric signal) i know that the trucks with the tow package has the connector under the dash (in the area of the trans hump) in which ford supplies you with a pig tail which plugs into it , it also has the wires named for purpose. If you dont have the tow package like you said you prob wont have the pigtail but you may still have the connector in that location

My truck doesn't have the tow package and it has the connector under the dash. It't right near my right knee. Look under the dash and you should see it. I went to Ford and bought the pigtail for about $7.
