engine died and puff of smoke.

A couple days ago, I was sitting in a parking lot idling. The engine started idling very rough like it was missing for about 10 seconds, then cut off. I cut off the key and tried to restart the engine. It turned over but didn't start. A big puff of smoke came out of the passenger side engine compartment and i shut it off. I looked under the hood, but didn't see anything, it was however an electrical burning smell.

I am thinking coil pack and fusible link maybe. Any other thoughts. It does still have power and turns over strong, just no fire.

The truck is a 2002 F150 with a 5.4.

Thanks,
Brian

A little more info... I am not getting any fuel according to my fuel pressure gauge. I also check voltage at the inertia switch and there is only 0.5 volts there. The insturment gauges are also all non responsive (fuel gauge does not move when I turn the key on even though there is an almost full tank). I am checking fuses now. The fusible link tested fine.

Figured it out. The #30 fuse blew when a c.o.p. cracked. The puff of sole was causesby a spark leacking out of the crack and arcing, across some snail shells that caught fire, to the manifold.

This makes #28 I believe for the number of coil packs i have replaced. I have also replaced the wiring harness going to the coil packs. Averaging about 1 every 3 months now with the majority of them being the front 2 on the driver side.

Sigh.
