Transmission Wire Harness Bad, 1998 Lariat
Transmission Wire Harness Bad, 1998 Lariat
Hi,
My truck has a fried transmission wire harness. OD Light blinking and in limp home mode. I can see multiple wires burnt and I'm quite sure that is the issue...Had a few fuses blown as well.
How difficult is it to replace the main harness that attaches to the passenger side of the trans? Does the trans need to be taken apart?
By the way, my truck is a 1998 4.6L V8.
Also, who should work on this? Anyone?? Dealer? Trans shop? Looking for some help and experienced people here.
Thanks so much in advance!

If you had wires burnt, I would guess they shorted to ground ( along the passenger side exhaust manifold ?? ) causing the fuses to blow.
If you are handy with a soldering iron, you should be able to repair them one by one and be back in service, no need to spend what could be big money on the factory harness ( it would be from connector to connector, so it could be a lot of money ).
If you repair them, get marine heat shrink that has the gel in it, so when you seal up the solder joints, they are water resistant.

My main question is whether anyone out there has had to replace the harness for this vehicle and if so what it entails. Does the tranny need to come apart? I know the bad portion of the harness is very near the end that connects to the ouside of the trans case.
Where does the other end connect? Should I take the vehicle to a dealer or a trans shop to take care of this or any shop? Any idea of harness costs? Can I get them off the internet? Part #'s?
Just trying to avoid getting ripped off before getting this addressed. Thanks so much for the advice.
