trailer winch?
trailer winch?
ok i have around 10 scrape cars i want to take off to the junkyard so i have trailer for the job and im fixing to mount a winch onto the trailer to winch the cars up but i dont know how to power the winch on the trailer i could haul 2 or three cars a day so if the winch was on the trailer how can i charge it where it wont go dead when im trying to pull the car on the trailer ?how long will it last if i have a deep cycle battery ? i was thinking about a smitty built winch
There is a huge amp draw on those electric winches. Make sure your alternator and battery are up to the task. Also I would be worried about charging the battery through the trailer plug with the amp draw of the winch.
Check the specs for wire size and length plus alt and battery requirements before you buy. I know some guys are running "0" wire for front mount winches, I don't think there is anything even close to that size in the trailer 7 Pin set up.
But then again......I could be full of beans.
Good luck.

so i hear u can just charge the battery when the trailer 7pin is hooked to the trucks 7 pin but u have to disconnect the 7 pin when u are going to use the winch unles u install a isolator or soemthing i forgot what it was called any help would be great
Jigger does bring up a vaild issue, you don't want to try charging the battery while using it. The amp draw would pop the fuse on the trailer tow battery circuit.
Just unplug the 7 pin. Not too sure how well that would last.
The Warn winch cables I think are 4 AWG, the battery charge trailer tow adapter is 10 ( 12 ? ) AWG

You can leave the trailer connected if you install a BIG resistor on the battery charge circuit. An H4 headlight bulb should work perfectly. Connect the ground terminal to the battery charge wire, and the other 2 to the trailer socket on the truck. That will allow enough current to flow to charge the battery, but if it gets to be more than ~10A during winch use, the bulb will start to glow dim & restrict it from going past 15A. Zip-tie the bulb's wires so the bulb won't get broken, and its heat won't damage anything. Wrap the bulb in aluminum foil to protect it & dissipate the heat, but don't wrap it so it holds water or shorts the wires. If the bulb ever stays on more than a few hours, it means the trailer battery is shot.

Remember that the trailer, battery, & winch depend on good GROUNDING as much as power, so make sure everything is clean & solid.
