low voltage problem
I still had the original battery in my 2001 4.6
I started hearing a grinding noise from the alternator and the battery light came on.
I replaced both the battery and the alternator and the battery light is still on.
I only have a dummy light tester, but at rest the battery is barely 12.5v.
when i start it only the first red (5v) light is on.
I had the alternator bench tested before I took it out the door. (2nd trip long story).
So what's stopping the system from charging?

Check fuse F11 in the BJB.
Otherwise, get a real voltmeter and measure the voltage while the engine is operating so you can troubleshoot the system.

Thank you project.
That did the trick. Somebody in the 97-03 forum had pointed me towards the "field" fuse which runs inline on one of the wires from the alternator. I followed that wire and I dont' have that fuse. So got out the owners maual and found that one.
It was puzzling but thankfully a simple fix.
