Troubleshooting back up sensor?

OK, my back up sensors in my 2006 lariat are not working correctly. (And yes, I need them...my fiance already totalled a camry that was hiding bhind her!)

Anyway, they don't seem to operate at all normally. However if I have the tailgate down, or a trailer behind me, they beep, so they are doing something, just not the right thing. Do they need to be aimed or calibrated somehow?

Did they ever work correctly ?

Did you have them out for something ( like the repair for the Camry ? )

It sounds like they were installed upside down somewhere, if they only go off with the tailgate down ( i.e they are pointing up ).

I just bought the truck a couple months ago, and it looks like it had some bumper damage already. It almost looks like they might be installed upside down. The two outers are slightly beveled up, while the two inners look to be square. I tried looking at the back of the sensors to see if there were arrows or indicators, but we are clearing out from the blizzard of 2010, and the inside of the bumper is snowpacked, and I didn't really feel like digging it out!
