Strange Box hanging from rear view mirror?

Hey whats up guys. Ive got a strange box hanging from my rear view mirror in my 04 SCREW. It has a small button on the top of it that doesnt seem to do anything??... It lights up but nothing happens. I thought it might have been a mirror dimmer or maybe a garage door opener... But no such luck. The box is maybe about the size of a pack of smokes and it looks like its facing downward at the dash.
I would load some pics of it,,, if i could figure out how to do it.

Ive pushed the button multiple times at night and durring the day and the mirror doesnt change. For all i know,,, I could be launching ICBM's at the Taliban! LOL!

Anybody know what this could be?

ok???? So if its a compass, then how does it work? does it project the direction on the mirror? if so,,, mine doesnt work. Its got power but i dont even have the slightest idea of where it would tell me the direction.

Thanks for the help and info by the way.

If you have an XLT, there is a temp and direction read out right under or beside the odemeter. The box is the sensor that feeds that readout.

Technically, it's called the "flux gate". (Really) I highly recommend reading your owner's manual cover-to-cover.

Actually it is called the Electronic Compass, 4 pin connector C909 :compass + | compass - ( with and without Sat radio) | voltage in start & run and ground ), cell 60 ( instrument cluster cell ).

2004 Owners manual does not have a "flux gate" or "flux" in it. The only gate hits in the manual refer to the tail gate or the electronic gate for the homelink section.
The owners manual only talks about the electronic compass in terms of using the info center to recalibrate ( nothing about the button on the electronic compass or the box on the mirror ).

I meant the technical name of the main electronic component inside the box is flux gate. It's what makes an electronic (nonmagnetic) compass possible. And I meant to read the owner's manual for instructions on the compass display, and everything else on the truck. Not for the name of each part. I guess those sentences kind of ran together, now that I reread what I wrote.

Ok, that makes sense and thanks for the lesson on electronic compasses. Never knew that is how it worked, I never stopped to think about how it worked being nonmagnetic, kind of took it for granted.

And yes, I know that i could go bitc11 to the stealership and probably get one for free.... But thats a hassle that i dont feel like going through durring the holidays. The digital compass on the OD is working just fine. But dont know what the button is for?
