power windows

I've got a 97 f-150 with power windows that quit working. The driverside is stuck down and the passenger side is up. Im getting power to the window motors themselves but just can't believe both motors went out at the same time.Any tests or any suggestions would be nice.

If you are getting power to the pigtail to the power window motor, then you have proven it is a motor problem.

How did you verify the power to the power window motor ?

Should be at the pigtail of the power window motor ( the other end of this ) :

You may have lost the ground for the power windows (assuming you DO have power).

I just stuck my test light in each side of the pig tail when i pushed the window switch up and down. I can here the motor click and it does get warm but thats it.

Does this mean 1 end on 1 pin, and the other pin on the other side ?

Sounds like the motor is getting power, if it clicks and gets warm ( also sounds like it is jammed in the track ).

If you unplug the pigtail, put both meter leads on the pigtail ( towards the switch, one on 1 pin, the other on the other pin ) press up, record the reading, press down and record the reading.
You should have the same value, but one is positive and the other direction is negative.

I'm actually using just a simple test light to see if I was getting any power. I don't have a good tester but I guess I'm going to have to get one.

...Sorry I tested each side of the pigtail individualy. One lit up on the down push and one lit up on the up push of the button. That's how I tested the power.

Process sounds correct, but hard to verify what is going on without a meter.

you can try pulling the motor, and cranking the window up by hand to see if it is binding up.

Now comes the fun part. That means drill out all those wonderful rivets then?It just confused me because they both stopped working at the same time, oh well could be worse...Thanks for your help

Why drill out the rivets ?

Cut in with a hole saw and unbolt the motor :

Oh yes I do.
Had to do that on Dad's '01, and the drill the rivet method would have made a mess for no reason. This way it was easy to pull out and put the new motor back in.

If the motor does not turn, take the advice of the thread above, and bang the motor against the tire. 1st day I did that, worked for about another 30-45 days ( ?? ). Dad removed and hit it again, worked another 2 weeks, next time it went out, he just replaced it.

Could be the motor brushes are just loaded up with carbon, and hitting it a few times on the tire knocks the dust out, so the motor operates again.

I was able to slip a wrench in there and tap the motors. The driver side works like new but the passenger side keeps sticking and moving real slow... I think I'm just gonna get a new motor for that side and be done with it. Thanks again for that info saved me a lot of time and headache
