Heated Mirror Switch

When I bought my 2009 F150 XLT I had the dealer change out the regular mirrors for trailer tow mirrors. The regular mirrors were NOT heated, the trailer ones are. All the wiring is there but the HVAC module doesn't have the heated mirror switch installed and the dealer says you have to buy the whole HVAC unit at a cost of $310.00 to get this switch. (I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere)
What is the operation of this switch? I know it sends a ground to operate the Rear window defrost relay but how does it release the relay after. I would like to know so I can buy another switch that will do the same thing.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was your solution?
Thanks

This was a change between 04-08 and the 09+ MY F-150s.

04-08 the instrument cluster operated the timer for the heated backlite.

The 09+ MY, this function was moved to the HVAC control panel itself.

The way you would do this without the factory HVAC panel is to install a delay timer relay ( like the Elk-960 ) and use a momentary switch to trigger the delay timer relay. The delay timer relay Normally open contact pairs are wired to + DCV and the mirror circuit for the heated glass.

Other delay timer relays have different ranges, the ELK-960 is 1-60 for the value ( thumb wheel selected ), and the units for the value are selectable for seconds or minutes ( jumper pin ).

To give you an example of usage, Elk has a PDF for the installation examples on the product page
