Cruise Control Failure

Interesting story on a cruise control failure that may help someone.

2004 F150 Lariat Non Heritage
83000 miles

The cruise control was working intermittently then not at all. I took it to the dealership who said it was the main computer PCM which was a very expensive repair. I finally decided to go ahead and replace it but when I picked up the truck the problem re-appeared the same day. I took it back and they said the PCM was bad again but they would warranty the item. I picked it up again and didn't even get home when it failed again. Finally they found that a diode in the shifter was causing the cruise control failure. They implied this was causing the PCM to throw bad codes. In the end they made the price right and refunded me much of the money I had spent.

I don't think this is related but I also had an Edge Evolution hooked up. My advice is to always remove these devices as they will inevitably be blamed at some point which happened to me. The numerous trips and ultimate diagnosis proved the Edge innocent.

I've heard of brake interlocks and other reasons for a failed cruise control but never a shifter diode. They ended up replacing the entire shifter unit.

Good Luck
