Battery Case swolen / Venting Acid- WTF?

Here's one for you all-
Went out the other day, and my battery was dead. Popped the hood, and the battery case was swolen, spewin acid from the vents to some of the nearby areas(Vacuum lines, PCM Wire harness).
I looked at the date on the battery-It had passed 5 years(Carquest brand) and was a sealed maintenance free battery.
Has anyone ever seen this happen before? I have spent a couple of hours with a spray bottle of Baking soda+water mixture spraying down all the areas that may have been exposed to the battery acid.
Any other suggestions on what to check? And yea, i went ahead and replaced that old battery.

make sure that you do not have an OVERCHARGING condition with your alternator. if it is putting out too much voltage it can cause the same symtoms with your battery swelling and spewing acid boiling over.

If the new battery is still doing it I would suspect a bad ground.

No new problems

I have come to the conclusion that the battery was just old, and probally a little low on electrolyte.
I have since replaced the battery, no overcharge conditions, no overflowing vents.
The battery that was replaced was 5 years old, and "maintenance Free".
this means i had no way of checking electrolyte level in the battery.
But now new problems have risen from the venting of battery acid-
exactly that- venting battery acid. all over vaccum tubes, PCM harness and etc,....
Break out the baking soda+water sprayer!!!
