Post Window switches?

Okay I had a thought the other day, could you put the same auto rolldown switch for the passenger side of my truck like the drivers side. Just to be alittle clearer what want to do I want to roll down both windows from the drivers side door with just one touch of each switch. Well what do you think about that? Joe D.

Had to get this back up to the top. I had the same thought and was about to post, but found this in a search. Is the auto down feature of the drivers side window integrated into the switch, or is there a relay in the door? It sure would be nice to order another drivers side switch and have auto down for both sides. I don't understand why they don't come that way from the factory, how much more could it cost, espcially for a truck?

Ok here goes my attempt. The switch on my truck (see sig) is different for the passenger side. It only goes down so far while the drivers one has a second "stage" to it that activates the auto feature. I think you would have to replace both drive and pass side switches and maybe only one would work but who knows. This would mean that you would have to change that switch(es). Next there is an auto down relay under the hood in you relay box (consult the manual). That is all I am good for. Lets see if we can get 98Screamer on board here he seems like he could do this to his truck and then tell us about it. Let's see all we have to do it tell his wife that she is being deprived of the luxuries of the "one touch down" switch and she will make 98's life a living hell until he figures this out LOL :P

Perhaps I can shed some light on this. I regret to say I don't have my chiltons manual in front of me, but I'll try to go by memory here.

Yes the switch is special. It's got a second momentary position, that activates the auto-down. Try pressing the down position on either door (with the key out of the ignition so the windows don't actually work) and feel the difference. You'll feel a small click on the drivers side switch.

What happens is that when that position on the switch is activated a time delay circuit in a GEM activates a relay that holds power to the down side of the circuit. I also recall that the drivers-side switch is not just a single switch, but 2 switches in one assembly (for driver and passenger side).

With that said, is it practical to build a factory system?? Nope. Can you do it some other way? Yup.

My suggestion would be to try to locate a switch that has that extra contact in the down relay. That could be wired up to a time-delay relay and a secondary relay to interrupt the relay should the up position be pressed (which will stop the window from rolling all the way down).

Perhaps someone else can build upon that idea as well. Good luck!

Thumbs down

I'm guessing that not only is the main switch different, but I think that there's a limit switch that detects when the window has made it all the way down. Occasionally mine clicks the motor a couple of times after it is down and I think the limit switch is close to being out of adjustment.
