98 F150 Problem
98 F150 Problem
Just installed my sound system that I had in my Honda in my '98 f150 extended cab today. Went to crank the truck up and it just ticked. Went and had the battery tested, it was only pushing 78 cranking amps. I bought a new battery, installed it. It fires up like a champ. However it seems since I have hooked my system up whenever the truck comes to a complete stop the idle gets very low and sometimes will cut off. I made sure that the AC and radio unit were off when cranking it. I get to the end of my driveway (about 70yds) go to stop and it shuts off. I have 2 12" Pioneer Premiere woofers, Rockford fosgate 550wx2 amp and a capacitor hooked up. I have the remote wire ran to the blue and white wire on the head unit wiring harness. Is the alternator just not powerful enough to run it or is there something simple that needs to be done. Ive removed the batt cable for 2 mins put it back on cranked the truck with nothing on. Threw it in drive got down to the end of my driveway and it cuts off again. Any suggestions??
I deleted your other thread as you are allowed only one thread per subject. Also, I am going to move this to the electrical forum as I think you will get more help there. Welcome to the site, hope you get what you need.

Quick test, unhook the new system and see if it happens still.
Could be a marginal Alternator.
I would find it hard to believe that the Honda had a larger than 130 A alternator on it ( but I cannot say 100% sure this is the case ).

My Son put a large system similar to what you have described in his 98. He had it wired by a professional installer, that has a decent reputation for this sort of installation. We did also upgrade to a 130 amp alternator. But ever since then, we have electrical gremlins in that truck. The system has been removed, but we still have some problems.
At one time we were having electrolysis in the cooling system, and now have had other electrical problems. everything points toward the Gem module. But I haven't had the truck in my possession long enough at one time to find the exact problem.

Yeah I know. In fact I had a bigger amp installed in a 01 chevy metro and a 78 toyota corolla lol... I just don't understand why it cuts off when im about to stop. Its like it doesn't know how to idle properly. I had a 03 Honda accord which is what that system came out of. When it cuts off, it spins over fine, so im thinking its not the alternator cause it turns over fine. Im just left scratching my head
