Post 1987-Starting Problem-Possible Short

When starting my truck recently it seemed as thought the battery was dead. I tried jumping it and nothing happened. At this point I went tried compression starting it. I never got to engage the clutch because all the electrical works lit up and I was able to start it. It starts with no problem occasionally but most of the time it registers as having no electicity. The battery is brand new and good. There is a quiet clicking noise (not like a dying solenoid) when I turn the key and the RPM gage mysteriously drops below -0-. Help. What the hell is going on?

sounds like a bad battery cable or connection. be sure to check the ground cable where it hooks to the engine.
