Post Keyless entry question

If a truck has power locks, does it mean that it automatically has keyless/remote functionality as well?

I've recently bought a '98 and was curious if I could use one of the remotes from my Ranger.

Thanks

You have to have a module also that is wired to the ignition, locks, etc.

you need a RAP remote-antitheft-personaly box in your truck. Look under the drivers dash putting your head next to the brake pedal above the fuse box on the firewall for a sqare flat box with 2 connectors in it one 20 pin and one 22 pin dins.. It should have the keypad access numbers on it for the drivers door

If you have the RAP you should be able to use the remotes and the remote keypad entry on the door. I would stop at dealer to confirm... then go to www.ebay.com and bid on the remotes. i got one for 10.00

Question

Turbo: This may be a dumb question, so please bear with me...

If there is no keypad on the door, does that exclude the use of the remote?

I haven't looked yet to see if I have the RAP, but will go check in a minute,

Thanks for the help!

KK

Not at all... that's how the lightnings come... remote entry (aka key-fob) with no door pad... you can add the keypad by ordering the correct door handle to match. There's a good post in the lightning forum on adding this, but you must have the RAP module. Not sure if this comes with power locks, but I think so.

if its a 98, then i cant come with a door keypad, that wasnt until 2000. If the theft light flashes, it prob has keyless, because pats didnt start until 99. cycle the key on and off 5 times, leaving it on the 5th time and see if the locks clunk down and back up. If they do, then you have it, and thats how you program transmitters.

Hey, Ted, just a thought.... you don't want to use the same remote for both vehicles... it seems like it would be nice to have them all on one, but if both of them are parked side by side, and you only want into one of them, you'll unlock them both. Then, after you get into the one you want to, you would have to re-lock the other one.... It seems like it would be nice, but could be a hassle in the end... I've got 3 (Probe, Truck, Explorer) but there's no way to seperate them... I've got a TON of keys for them all! But at least I know I'm only un-locking the one I want to get into.

Oh, and Jeff was right about the years.... forgot they didn't start with that stuff until 99... I don't think you can add the keypad to the 98s....

Turbo, Did you allready have the GEM module under the dash or did you add it, ex, the 98'? That is the most important mod that I want to do, but I need an answer to the GEM question. Thanx too much in advance, Dennis.

Hi dennis, According to my wiring diags the only module I see is a autolamp module connected in tandem with the new autolamp switch. I don't see how the GEM module would come into play with this install.

I ordered the auto lamp switch, autolamp module and a new dash cover. The parts should be in and installed today. If it works I'll give you the part numbers so you can order.

Turbo, The GEM is needed to install the keypad. That is where you find the factory code. Did you install an aftermarket item?

The rap module is needed to install the keypad (RAP stands for remote-anti-theft-personality module) The keypad gets wired to this module @ c256 and c257. These two connectors come from the gem and plug into the RAP.
I think all 150's and expedtions have gems- looking at the ford wiring diags it looks like all modules for trucks iterface with it. Wipers, abs, hazard, power windows, radio, etc

The keypad code is located on the RAP module and all parts I used were ford factory. my code was on the module facing up so it could not be seen by looking at it.

In the case of my wifes 1998 EXPY EB The rap module is present along with door code but the keypad in the handle was not an option in 1998. I had to make a harness and run it to the rap module. It works factory.

With my 2000 F150 the harness was capped off inside the door right above the speaker all I had to do was plug in the ford keypad and change the handle.

So it's the RAP module I should be looking for? I take it that this can be added very easily then. I will probally have to order the RAP, harness and door handle from Ford because I can't find any wrecks at the local junkyard. Thanks for your help, Dennis.
