Key Fob programming
Anyone got a service manual?
My '97 (in my sig) that I just bought used only came with one 3 function key fob('lock', 'unlock',and 'panic').
Markings on the back are: TRW inc 3165189, FCC ID:GQ43VT4T, DOC 1470 K763. Same as on the original one. (I've seen this fob on other Ford vehicles, inc a Taurus and a Sable btw).
Wanting a second fob for the spare key, I bought a new one and can't seem to program it. Local dealer volunteered how to program it but I can't seem to get it to work.
Their procedure was to cycle ignition between 'off' and 'on' either 8 or 10 times, (tech wasn't sure), but either one until the power locks cycle. Then just simultaneously press a button on both fobs and that's all.
Tried it and never get to the point that the locks cycle. Tried many variations, to no avail. Is the procedure for this in the factory manual?
I'd sure appreciate it if someone has the magic touch on this...

The method of programming the new fob is correct as you describe. Make sure you turn the ignition from 'off' to 'run' rather quickly. In fact, do it as quickly as you can til the popwer locks go down then up. Then press the buttons on both fobs til you get the same program into each one. Also, point the fobs at the dash panel that's just to the left of steering wheel. That's where the sensor is located. Good luck and keep trying. Ford charges about $35. bucks for this.
OK Duckhntr - I'll give it another try. Thanks very much for checking in on this. I was cycling as quickly as possible (I'd even thought during the time about possibly stripping something internally to the lock), but I'll sure go through it again and let you know how it worked.
DuckHntr, thanks again for the help, but as another thread is saying, 'this dog won't hunt!'. I understand everything you've said, and how hard can cycling the ignition key between off and run until the locks pop be, but it just won't do it. I've tried pausing, going as fast as possible, etc. Locks just won't go.
Wonder if it matters at all the truck is a Canadian variant. Wouldn't seem so, the fob is just the same....
Ideas? Or I'll just take it in, hate to leave it for a day and pay a wrench to twist the key for me though....
Thanks again for any ideas........

Check out the above link for a good explanation on how to program the fobs on a 2000 model. Not sure if it will work on older models, but worth a try?

Thanks Dennis - I've looked through the post (did try searching for past threads but didn't find this one for some reason). I'll look at the it again, doesn't seem on the surface I've missed anything since I can't get to the point where the locks pop; but, I'll search the owner manual for the key positions and go from there.
Again my thanks - I'll let you know how it goez....

Programming
NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters must be programmed at the same time.
To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the RAP module, perform the following steps:
1. Make sure that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered.
2. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN five times within ten seconds, ending in RUN. If the RAP module has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and then unlock all doors.
3. Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
4. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait several seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, refer to Diagnosis and Testing in this section.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 2, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the RAP module will lock and unlock all doors one last time to confirm.
There is also a detailed test procedure of the RAP module and antenna, but I can't just cut and paste it here and I'm not sure how to get it here.

Thanks also Y2KSport - I've been thinking about it and I'll try it one more time; if it doesn't work, I'm going to try resetting the computer. Hey, rebooting works on pc's...
having read the SuperChip threads it appears that to reset the onboard computer (don't know if the ecu is the same one for this function) one disconnects the battery and turns on the headlights to drain the residual voltage within the system. Then I'll try it again. My only corn-cern is what if in doing this I lose the functionality I have...? No big deal as the manual locks will still work until I can get it serviced...

Y2kXLTSport(sorry for omission last time), I can't seem to get through to the Ford Tech site you gave me the URL to; wants a userid and password. Went to the root page, and there's two places to log in. Would you mind giving me the login/password and which one to use it on? If you'd prefer to email it to me, I'm at sanderso@tideworks.com. I'll be off the air for a few days traveling on business, fyi.
I have done this myself twice and ad no problem. DO ONE AT A TIME.
Flip the key back and fourth 8 or ten times (whatever the book says) then hit any button (lock or unlock) on one fob at a time within a couple of seconds of each other. That should do it---Bob

let me guess yours is an old style 97 right? u said it was a 97 hd, on the driver's side under the dash there is a connecotor ( 2 pin) that u have to short to ground - then the horn will chirp and it will allow u to programm the key fob, i've only done this once and i cant remember wich connctor - it is near the trans hump - best to have a manual or take it to the dealer, they should only charge about half an hour
Black150 Off Road,
YES! It _is_ an old style (square, not like the current 250LD/150). I haven't been able to get it to work for the life of me. In fact, reading your post, it is also a Canadian model, don't know if that makes a difference or not.
It's developed a bit of a chirp in the motor when cold, so I'm going to take it to the dealer for warranty fix before it's up in March (24K miles) so I'll have them do the connector ground too.
Thanks very much, it was driving me nutz...

no problem - i could try and find the info for u on wich connector and wich wire to ground but honestly it is one of those things that a person has to be shown, when i did it i had an evtm and crossed my fingers that it was the right one - it worked but i did this about a couple three years ago so i know where it is if i look, but dont remember well enought to tell u exactly where and the color of the wires
