Question Oil Light

I have a problem with my oil temp light. Sometimes when I start it up the oil temp light is on and the gauge is down all the way. After I drive it for a little bit, it will come up for a few seconds, then go back down. After I drive for about 5 minutes, everything is normal again. I took it to the dealer and the problem didn't happen that day(of course) and they could not find nothing wrong. Has anyone seen this before? It's very annoying.

Thanks.

I had this happen to me the other day. I started it up and the oil light came on and the pressure gauge didn't come up. I started it up later and no problem. I haven't had a chance to ask about it, either here or at the dealer. Let us know what happens.
Thanks

Nomopar4me: It's the gauge (oil) in the upper left hand corner. To the left of it, two red lights are on; oil (lamp) and temp (thermometer). Do you think that the revised oil switch for an oil pressure guage problem could solve the problem? Have you seen any information about this on the net that I can bring to the dealer? Thanks.

Silver Y2K: Isn't it odd how this only happens some of the time. I'm trying to figure out if it takes certain things to trigger it (cold, heat, moisture, etc) and haven't had any luck yet. Also, did your flowmaster make a big difference on your 4.6, I've got the same and was considering it.

Please let me know if you find anything out, it's one of things that drive you crazy!!!

Hokie,
My 01 SCrew has been at the dealer with the same problem. On cold starts, the oil gauge comes up, goes down, light comes on, repeat until engine warms up. Started happening with first cold spell here in Dallas. They replaced the sending unit, said they have had a few come in with the same problem. I'll see in the next couple of days if this is the fix. I'll post when I know.

Rustyscrew:

Please do let me know if it fixes the problem. Also, can you tell me the exact part so I can spell it out to the dealer? How did they figure it out? It is very annoying.

Just a side note: I was in Dallas last week on business and had a great time. Even got to catch a Mavs game.

Thanks.

Hokie,
Been gone awhile, sorry for the delay. The fix has worked like a charm, no more annoying lights or low gauge indicator. The dealer went through a diagnostic; checked codes, checked oil pressure, etc. Found the sensor had a fault to ground, so they replaced the oil pressure sensor. Don't know if I believe the fault to ground, it was an intermittant problem not a hard failure. Don't know the part number, I'll look on the repair sheet and post later, it was only around $25.

Glad you enjoyed Dallas, hope the Mavs won for you. Hope this info helps.

Rusty

Rustyscrew:

Yes, this is a great help. Please do let me know what the part name/number is. Don't want it to make it any harder on the dealer than I have to. They'll end up driving my truck for 15 miles again. We both know if this problem doesn't happen first thing, it's not going to happen. Of course that day, it didn't happen.

No, the Mavs got beat pretty bad by the Sixers.

Thanks.

Hokie,
The FMC part number for the 5.4l is F8AZ 9278 DA, description "switch assy, oil pressure". The cost listed was $5.00 for the part. Made a mistake in my other post, the fault was an "OPEN" not a short.

Good Luck

I have had the same problem in my truck too. The guage does not work on start up when it is cold out. The dealer replace the sending unit, but it has done it again. Did you dealer tell you why their would be an open circuit when it is cold out?

Regards

Sean

sigalph,
Sorry, I didn't ask. I was just happy to get my truck back, after 2 days, and fixed. I don't know how the sender is setup, I haven't seen a schematic. When cold, mine would not consistantly register pressure after startup until the engine warmed up. The gauge would fluctuate between Ford's idea of "acceptable" pressure and no pressure as well as the light going on and off. In my case, the oil pressure was always there.
