Post Temp Guage

The temp gauge on my truck worked when I bought it, but after about 40k miles it stopped working. It stays all the way over in the cold. It used to come on all of the sudden after about 2 hours of driving and now it doesn't even do that anymore. Is this a problem with the guage in the dash itself? any help would be great.
Thanks, Brett

Probably a bad sending unit(temp sensor).

You know what. I have a 1995 F150 and had the same problem at around 75k Miles. I replaced the Temperature sending unit and everything seems to be okay now. Of course it hasn't been as hot as it was when my truck kept overheating. But I'm pretty sure it was the sending unit. Cheap fix but takes a little effort. At least on my 4.9 I6 it was hard to get to. Be sure and drain the coolant first *rolls eyes*

thanks for all your help, looks like the first thing to change will be the sending unit.
