Post Another Recal???

Ruling due on Ford recall
California judge may order millions of vehicles recalled for ignition defect
October 11, 2000: 11:17 a.m. ET

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - For nearly two decades, Ford Motor Co. allegedly ignored defects in ignition devices in millions of its vehicles, and kept consumers in the dark.

Wednesday, a California judge is expected to decide whether to order a massive recall, something never before done by a judge.

In a tentative ruling in August, Superior Court Judge Michael E. Ballachey hinted he might order the recall, saying Ford repeatedly deceived federal regulators by claiming there were no problems with ignition devices in vehicles sold from 1983 to 1995.

Ford had been aware since at least 1982 that installing the ignition module on the distributor exposed it to excessive heat, the judge wrote.

Ford documents show the automaker was warned by an engineer that high temperatures would cause the device to fail and stall the engine, confirmed the problem in internal studies, and could have moved the module to a cooler spot for an extra $4 a vehicle.

Ford (F: Research, Estimates) has denied its ignitions were flawed.

Ballachey is presiding over a class action suit on behalf of 3.5 million current and former Ford owners in California. Similar suits are pending in Alabama, Maryland, Illinois, Tennessee and Washington.

While the judge wrote that Ford sold as many as 23 million flawed vehicles nationwide, a recall would apply only to about 2 million vehicles sold in California.

The Center for Auto Safety estimated that a California recall alone would cost Ford at least $125 million.

After complaints from customers and dealers about stalling, Ford recalled 1.1 million 1984-85 vehicles in 1987 to repair their ignition systems.

I had a 1986 Bronco II with the 2.9 V6 engine that we've had in our family for 13 years, and it never once gave any problems at all. Well execpt for the occasional(sp)? battery, wiper blades, etc ...

I really miss that thing, I loved it. It had 186,000 miles on it when I traded it for my 2000 F-150 which I like just as good, maybe better.
