89 Neutral Safety Switch

Post 89 Neutral Safety Switch

I need to by pass my neutral safety switch to determine if it is at fault for my no start condition. Does anyone know which wires to jump? I beleive it is the red/lt blue, but it still won't start. The reason I suspect the switch is because the first time I experienced the no start, I put more pressure on the clutch pedal and it started. Now it won't start at all. Battery is fully charged. TIA

Red/Lt Blue the two on the end near the floor.

Thank you. I jumped the switch and the motor would still not turn over. Checked voltage at small terminal on starter solenoid, 8.5 volts. Turned key to run, jumped from 12 volt side of solenoid to small terminal and the truck started. So it would seem that I am not getting enough voltage to the solenoid to engage it. Since the neutral switch was out of the equation, I suspect that it is the ignition switch or a bad connection between the ignition switch and the solenoid. Does this sound right? Thanks again.

Sounds like you're on the right track. You're losing voltage somewhere between the batt and the solenoid. Start at the beginning... check the terminals for a good connection. (Warm-fuzzies not welcome here) then follow the wiring to the switch, check going in and coming out for 12-14v when cranking. Then follow it through the Neutral Safety switch (again 12-14 before and after) It sounds to me like either a bad switch (they do wear out eventually) or a short in the wire leading from the switch to the solenoid. Checking step-by step and piece-by-piece will help pinpoint it.

You can also jumper directly across the solenoid. If it starts, the problem lies between the ignition and the solenoid. If it doesn't start, the problem lies between the solenoid and the starter.

This will help you to better pin-point where to look.

Just one thing before you try this - the neutral safety switch will be bypassed, so make sure the truck is in neutral before you try!
