What do you mean the backup light doesn't work? Are you talking about the lights at the back of the truck or the one above the bed at the top rear of the cab?

If you're talking about the high mounted brake light that also has clear lenses, those clear lenses are just courtesy lights for the bed. They're supposed to come on when you open the doors or turn the interior lights on with the dimmer switch.

Do the interior lights come on when you turn the dimmer thumbwheel all the way past the bright setting until the switch clicks? Do the lights in the door come on when you open the doors? Do the map lights work at all?

Does the chime come on when you open the door with the key in the ignition with the engine off? Does it chime with the headlights on and key out of the ignition?

Your problem could be faulty door switches, broken wires going to the fixtures in the cab roof, or something else that's beyond my meager knowledge about our trucks.

Give us more information so we can help you a bit more.

BTW, how many miles on the truck? If less than 36K miles, it should still be under the manufacturer's warranty. If so, let Ford fix it.

Did you say the center mounted brake light doesn't work too? I'm assuming you bought this truck second hand? Are you sure this truck wasn't in a major accident? I'm wondering if the roof was damaged at some point and major work was done on it and the body shop forgot to hook the lights back up. But then, you also said the door lights don't work either, so I'm totally confused now, so I think I better quit now.

To have all of that go wrong at once seems rather strange. I'm thinking it's not a coincidence which brings me back to the possibility of an accident at worse or a botched electrical repair job at best. Anyway, let us know more details.

Hey Ya'll,

My wife and I just purchased our second F150 (1999) and brought it home and immediately noticed that the cab lights (to include the door lights) don't illuminate when opened.

Additionally, I noted that the 3rd brake light (and back up) doesn't work either.

I cant find any broken fuses...anyone have idears?

Thanks for the quick feedback!...Yes, we bought it used but love it to death!!!

Okay, let's see, I understand the clear lenses at the top of the cab are courtesy lights..but they don't work, nor does the brake light on the top of the cab.

The interior dome lamps, though they don't come on when the door is opened, work individually with the push of a button...and also, the door lights don't function (maybe they are supposed to but they do on my other truck).

The chime just sings away. The interior lights dont work when I flick the dimmer either. Ford has it tomorrow and they said "no problem"...but I trust them as far as I can see them!

Yes, it's under 36 and I have the full factory carry over plus 3 years anyway.

thanks again!

It's sounding more and more like some wires are not connected. Let us know what the dealer comes up with.

Of all the stupid-**** things!!! We just got the truck back from the dealer...and I'm so embarassed.

The guy who had it before me did not know how to use the dimmer switch...the lights were always on so he...get this....took the light bulbs out of the doors, dome light, courtesy light, and rear brake light! What a dumbass!!!

Anyway, after putting in the bulbs, the Ford Service manager gave it a complete diagnostics to ensure there was no other problem.

Duuuuhhhhh!

Oh damned, that's funny! LOL.

I wonder what kind of person the previous owner is. I bet he's the kind of guy who keeps taking chain saws back to the dealer telling them it's broken because he can barely cut down one tree a day until he goes to another repair shop where the guy starts it up and the dummy asks, "Hey, what's that sound?"
