Second battery setups?
Hi, all...
Does anyone have a nice article (with pictures, maybe) about different kinds of second battery setups?
Thanks much!

TomKenney,
Go to www.wranglernw.com . That's the set up I'm running. Pretty nice stuff. The only things I didn't like about it was the way they engineered the battery hold down bar. I ended up making my own out of some stainless flat bar. Also, there is a plastic vacuum can between the battery and the fender. The can slips onto some brackets on the stock battery tray, the Wrangler piece has no provisions to mount the vacuum can. I used some cable ties to secure it for now. Like with most "custom" stuff, you end up doing a bit of fabrication yourself if you want it to be right. As long as you know to expect it, you'll be alright. There may be others that you can just bolt in, so check around. With this one you also have to move the washer reservoir towards the front about a half inch. The instructions say a quarter but it really needs about a half to keep it from rubbing the hold down rod. Hope this is some info you can use.

Wrangler dual battery kit with red & yellow top Optima batteries. Torsion bars cranked up 2 turns. Needs one more door and a lot more power. I think I need to talk to Mr. Whipple.

Thanks! That looks like what I'm looking for. I also need info on various wiring setups, but that's out there, I'm sure.
BTW, I've got a '92, so my battery is on the opposite side from the washer tank. I may indeed have to do some fiddling to get things to work.

I installed a second battery in the rear quarter panel of my Expedition. I put a 200 amp fuse right off the post and used 2awg run through the frame rail to the engine compartment. Not impressed with the voltage drop most isolators have (or the price), I used a Tekonsha solenoid good for at least 160 amp surge. Most of the time the re-charge current is much lower. I built a 5 minute delay circuit that waits after the alternator is working before automatically energizing the solenoid to parallel the batteries. Of course with all the stupid courtesy lights on the expy, the standard battery ran down while the door was open during installation. The best part was then flipping the toggle switch to manually parallel the batteries and she turned over at about 2 times normal rpms for a really fast start.
The previous post showing duals right in front looks a lot easier but you gotta pay big bucks for the optimas. If they are at least as high Amp-hour as a full size and can deep cycle it might be a good choice.
