Talking Programing Key Fobs

Please help me ...

I am purchasing a 2000 Explorer and I own a 1998 F-150. I asked the salesman .. who WAS the service manager for 10 years .. if the fob learns the computer .. or does the computer learn the fob signal. He said that the fob learns the computer .. I doubt that.
The reason I want to know .. is that I want to use one fob for BOTH trucks. I really can't see having 2 identical fobs on my key ring. Can anyone tell me about this .. or what is the proceedure for programing the fobs .. I know it is key on key off repeat repeat .. ect.. ect... hehe .. please ...
anyone out there that can answer this?

Thanks
Russ

Hi Russ, I just received my 2000 F-150 Lariat and was going through my owners manual. Here's what it had to say about programming remote transmitters.
It is necessary to have ALL (maximum of four-original and/or new) of your remote transmitters availabe prior to beginning this procedure.
To program the transmitters yourself: Insert a key in the ignition and turn from 3(Off) to 4(On) eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the 4(On) position. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that programming mode has been entered.
Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.)
Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has been programmed.
When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn th ignition to 3(Off) or wait 20 seconds. Again the doors will lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed.
The best way to describe the numbers 3(Off) and 4(On) is a picture of the ignition in the book numbered. The way it appears to me is your turning your key from 3(Off) "foward one click" to 4(On)....that's one position before turning over the engine.
Hope this helps ya out Russ!

Best Wishes & Good Luck!

ExpyBob ...

Well here's the deal .. I am sure it will work... but my wife decided that maybe she would rather I didn't do it .. and I guess I agree with her (I hate doing laundry)Often we are parked close together say in a parking lot .. and she leaves before I do. As she presses the unlock .. click there goes the truck unlocked too ...I would hate to have my truck sitting unlocked in the Tavern parking lot. so .. I never tried it.. I am SURE it will work though .. just makes sense.

Take Care
Russ

Cool

I believe the remotes are different. The remotes have to be the same identical ones, or they will not work. The computer learns the code of the remote, but it has to be one that it can learn. Different remotes for different vehicles. If you had two explorers, it could be done.

You sound very similar to me. After work my better half meets me at the club we hang out in (bar). She'll leave first to start dinner and I'll follow later. This would cause the same problem for me. Good thinking----Bob

I'm not familuar with the '00 Explorer, but up to atleast 99, the Elplorer and the F150 used the same remotes. If they look the same, they are the same. Ford uses a diferent case for the different frequencys. The computer learns the fob, and it WILL work.

As y'all have mentioned, that will leave both vehicles ulocked if they are parked neer each other. The solution is to get into the habbet of using the fob to unlock, then opening the door and hittling the lock button. This way the vehicle that's sitting is locked, and so is the one you're driving away in.

It just depends on which is more convinant, carrying two fobs, or hitting the lock button after you open the door.

Unhappy

FYI, I was reading some shop info a while ago, and I came across the comment that the Anti-theft system is armed by: The key fob, or the electric "Lock" switch on the door. It appears if you just hit the mechanical button on top of the door, it won't arm. So I changed my usual method of locking when I leave. Before, I almost always just hit the door top button, and it seems that would not have armed it.
Have not tried breaking into my own truck yet to prove it!
