Horn beeps by itself

The horn on my truck was beeping by itself, does anyone know what would cause this? When I picked up my truck about a year and a half ago the steering wheel emblem was dented, can this have something to do with it?

When is the horn beeping ?

Could be the horn switch is making intermittent contact causing it, depending on when it is happening.

Is there an after market alarm installed ?

That's what I was thinking. It did it when I was sleeping..it wasn't like an alarm or panic beep, it was one long beep that lasted for maybe a half hour. It stopped before I got out to fix it, so I don't know if the horn is broken. I didn't want to try beeping it because I figure the neighbors heard enough of it, so I'll try it when there's nobody around.

Ok I found exactly what it is, I got out my trusty owner's manual after finding out the horn doesn't work, and looked at the fuse location for the horn..it was burnt out, which was what I thought the problem was for the horn not working. I pulled a fuse from another place and put it in, and the horn still stuck on depending on where I pressed the cover. Are you ready for the reason for it sticking? The steering wheel emblem was bent like someone thought they were going to teach it a lesson, so I removed it, straightened it out, put one of those black decals on and put it back in a few months ago. When I pulled it out I found the two top prongs were bent, causing the horn to sound. I unbent them, put them back in and tried repeatedly to make it stick, but it hasn't, so I see it as problem fixed. The cruise control was also not working, but I saw that it is on a separate fuse, so I figured it is a safety feature that the cruise control won't work if the horn doesn't work. I went for a drive with a good horn fuse in place, and the cruise control is working fine now.

Well the horn is beeping by itself again, this time removing the emblem doesn't help. I took the fuse out. Does anyone know how to remove the airbag cover so that I can see what's happening in there? It's making a connection without pressing on it, and stops sometimes when I hit it.

Ok I just did a search on the internet and found out about the two screws behind the steering wheel, is it safe to just remove the cover without disconnecting the battery, or should the battery be disconnected?

I think I found the problem. I did some searching on the internet, and it turns out someone was having the same issue when he did what I did, which was remove the steering wheel emblem. When he put it back in, the tabs on the emblem "dimpled" the electronic horn pad, completing the circuit and making it sound continuously. I started having this issue not too long after I did this, so it looks like this is the problem. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement pad cheap?

If you are talking about item #3 below, it seems to be part of the air bag module.

There are two screws that hold on a wide plastic pad that screw onto item #3, and it has a wire connected to it that plugs into the clock spring. It is my understanding that this is the horn activating device, can I buy it separately? I've seen used airbags for sale on e-bay for about $150 with shipping, but I just need the horn pad that screws onto it. According to someone on ford-trucks.net, the part number is ford part # 6c3z-13b802-c it's called a horn repair kit. This link goes to a page that describes what I'm talking about. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/51...n-problem.html

Well I fixed my horn issue by cutting out the center section of the horn pad and placing a piece of plastic in, and taping it on with electrical tape. The dealership only sells it as part of the several hundred dollar airbag unit, it's pretty disgusting that Ford would do that to its customers.

looks like the part number above is the item #3 in the diagram a few posts up.

6c3z13b802c
MSRP : $300.95
Online Price : $198.63
Description : KIT

It is not like Ford is trying to rake their customers over the coals, that cover needs to open up correctly on airbag deployment, so it does not take a chunk out of your face. If they sold that part stand alone, how do they avoid mis installations, and the airbag not deploying correctly, or the cover coming off wrong, and taking an eye out.

Hope your repair is not going to cause a problem if your airbag goes off, remember you have single stage full force airbags in your MY F-150.
They deploy at full force regardless of the speed, impact severity and deceleration rate. and seat position.
Actually both airbags and the pryos in both seat belts go off upon deceleration above 23.5 MPH.

Ask me how I know this one ( I was the only one in the truck at the time ) :

The bumper is the driver's side wheel of the F-250 that turned left across my lane, from a side street on my right, I was driving 35 MPH.

Well #3 looks like the whole airbag assembly, and I believe the horn repair kit is just the electronic pad inside the cover, which would still require opening the airbag..someone correct me if I'm wrong, I refused to pay $300 to get my horn working, so I didn't see what that repair kit looks like. The tabs on the steering wheel emblem dented the horn pad, causing the little rubber dots inside it to compress, and making the horn sound continuously. I just removed the damaged area, and assembled the airbag cover exactly as it was..I got my horn working again, and more importantly my cruise control. That's more important to me anyhow.
