97 F150- both power windows dead
97 F150- both power windows dead
Both sides stopped working at the same time- neither will move from the driver side, and the passenger switch does nothing either. So I checked the switch, cleaned it, reassembled... nothing. So I got a new (used) switch from LKQ who said it was pre-checked. Still nothing. NADA. (Not like the auto parts place.)
I had bought the whole armrest part that holds the switches, and at least now my power mirrors work again after swapping that switch out, but no windows still.
When I press the driver side down switch, I can hear something under the dash clicking. Not so with the passenger side, it is totally silent.
I don't mind replacing the motor, or the GEM if I have to. I just don't want to continue to diagnose by process of elimination- it's expensive, and I'm not a very good mechanic. And I don't think it's the window motor since both sides won't work.
Any advice at all is appreciated. Good advice is appreciated even more. TIA.

It's your GEM or PCM whatever you want to call it. 97's had a water leak into the module and shorted out some of the outputs. I had a '97 and exact same thing happened 2 years ago.
I even had the windows go down all by themselves once in awhile. I trouble shooted all the wiring, switches and window motor. Took it to the dealer and was over $600 to replace the PCM. I lived with it for just over a year and finally scrapped it out for a '09.

If it was only the driver's side window that was not working, it could be the GEM ( PCM has nothing to do with the windows ), but considering both do not work, I would say it is not the GEM.
1st did you check the fuse for the power windows ? There is no note of this in your post.
Next if that is good, is to check for power at the driver's side switch, this is the Light Blue w/ Blacks stripe wire.
If the fuse has power on both sides, and there is no power at the door, next things to check are the accessory delay relay and for broken wires in the door to a-pillar.

OK, I've checked fuses but not recently. I've just been living with it for a year or so.
I'll recheck fuses. I tried checking power at the switch and tried checking continuity thru the switch but I wasn't real clear on where power SHOULD be, so I'll look at that again. I had a wiring diagram but some of my wires were different colors. I'll check the light blue with black for power. I did disassemble the switch and clean it, and then recently replaced it.
I checked the door pillar where the wires pass through, and things looked okay there- no sign of wear or rubbing.
I don't know what the accessory delay relay is. I know there are several similar relays in the fuse box (black square boxes) and I swapped them around and then put them back- no change.
I'll re-examine these things tonight or tomorrow and repost.

Well, the plot thickens. It rained a bit last night, and this morning neither my wipers or my interior lights worked. I ran the heater on FLOOR for 30 seconds or so and the wipers came back. So it looks like time to replace the module regardless, and hopefully I'll get windows with it as well. Now I just have to figure out which module I need for my truck.
