When I open the door on my truck to get in, I notice sometimes the odometer light lights up displaying the miles only. When I close the door, it goes out. No key in the ignition . I also have an intermittant bulb on/off that lights up the led display that I haven't got around to re-seating or changing. So if I fix my bulb , it will light up all the time when the door opens??? They work like a dome light??

If the display does not light up every time, you could have a problem with the pin connectors for the odometer display.

While you have the cluster removed from the truck to replace the bulb, take a look at the pin connector, and on the cluster for cold solder joints.

 

Thanks for the reply sscully, How about the the bulb coming on and off just like the dome light when I open and close the driver door??? That can't be normal

Is the sometimes the bulb, or sometimes the display ?

I read this as the display sometimes works when opening the door, and the back light bulb has been intermittent, when the instrumentation illumination is on.

LCD always work. it is the green bulb that backlights the display comes on or not. I have read up on how to fix the backlight bulb but the question remains,
when the bulb is fixed, should it light up in sync with the opening and closing of the door just like the dome light does? WHEN my bulb decides to work for the day, thats what it does!!!

 

My Lariat the millage only illuminates.

This is in the info center, not sure what trim level you have.

 

I have the compass/temp/odometer display and the display lights up showing only the odometer with the door opening. The compass/temp light up once the key is turned on. So it sounds like this is normal.
