'98 XLT Fog Light Install

Hey everyone,

My truck didn't come with fog lights, has the blanks in the bumper you remove to install fog lights, and doesn't have the wiring from what I can see. It doesn't have the socket to plug the fuse into the junction box under the hood, either. I bought the headlight/fog light switch, as well as the factory fog light assemblies. My question is what relay(s) and fuses do I need, and how do I wire all of it up? Thanks.

Hey Scully, sorry it took me so long to get going on this project. Other stuff came up. I purchased the correct switch, which is the same year as my truck ('98). No autolamps, w/foglights.

If you have a 1998 MY switch, this switches ground for the relay you will need to add.

Using this diagram as the basis for the install, with some changes:

Terminal 85 in the diagram above is directly connected to the brown wire on the headlamp switch ( parking lamps ).

Terminal 86 is connected to the headlamp switch connector yellow wire ( this is the switch to ground for the fog lamp switch ):

This will make the fog lamps come on with the parking lamps ( and the switch pulled out ) and allow them to operate with the low beams or high beams.

Ahh, I see what you were asking. Sorry, my bad. The switch I bought is Motorcraft part no. SW-5262. I'd like to place the fuse and relay in their respective junction box locations which are currently empty. Where do I get the contacts or sockets they plug into, and what do I need? Thanks.

Not sure what switch that is. The 97-99 fog lamp switch is different than the 00-03 fog lamp switch ( one switches ground, the other power ).

The onyl thing I can thing of is to go to a bone yard, and pull a fuse panel and use the contacts out of it. Have not seen fuse panel contacts as purchasable items. Maybe the dealer might have them ?? ( they usually just change the fuse panel )

Ahh, okay. I've been told that once you take those contacts out, they're not really reusable. So I just stick a relay somewhere and wire it to the contacts coming out of the switch? I got the 97-99 switch new from Amazon.

The contacts sometimes can be removed from the fuse panel by releasing the tabs with dental picks. Some times it works, other times not so well.

Best bet is to follow the wiring suggestion above. If all this is external, it will be a lot quicker install.

The part number does not look like a Ford part number, that is why I cannot find out for sure. If Amazon said it was the correct MY, it should be.
A Ford part number would look like this : 6L3Z-14B004-AA ( that is not a switch part nuber, it is a front impact sensor ).

My '99 XL had wiring from the switch to the firewall, but nothing in the engine compartment. I ran wires from the switch into the engine compartment, mounted a relay there, and ran wires from the relay to the lights ... pretty simple

Here's how I did it ... Installed Lights Behind Grill

Scully, just fyi that part no. is F85Z-11654-BAA. Thanks for the suggestion, Fairlainer. I haven't looked to see if there's wiring between the switch and the firewall, yet.

Scully, since I have the proper factory switch (F85Z-11654-BAA) where you pull out for the fog lights, what do I need to do now as far as wiring? There is no wiring already present near where the lights will be installed.

Post #5 above shows the generic aux lamp circuit, and where to wire what to the factory switch to make a Bosch automotive type relay work.
