Ground Wire Question

Does the ground wire for an electronic component need to be the same size as the power wire? Or can it be smaller and still be adequate? For example if I was adding an in-line fuel pump, can you use a 10-12 gauge power wire and then a 14-16 gauge ground wire or does it need to be the same size as the power wire to keep it from overloading?

It's a DC series circuit and the ground will carry the same current as the positive. It needs to be the same size.

Perfect! I was assuming it carried the same load but wanted to make sure.
Thanks!
