Hey Guys,
Just came over from **************. Can anyone help with with hardwiring a radar detector. I searched it but am still confused. I heard that there is a wire behind the radio that I can tap into, but I don't know which one. If anyone has any pictures or a link to a thread that I missed that would be great. By the way I have the Valentine One radar if it makes a difference.

What you want to do is tap into a non-mission critical circuit that only has power when the engine is running. By "non-mission critical" I mean a circuit that - if compromised - will not shut the truck or anything mission critical down. For instance, your Fuel Pump circuit might only be live with the ignition on, but I'd hate to take that circuit down with a radar detector. (Well, at least you can't speed ...)

As for the "only on with the ignition" part, you don't want your detector going off in a parking lot when you're not there. That's just an invitation to steal it.

I too have a V1 and love it. It's hard wired, but I honestly don't remember which circuit I tapped into. I can tell you that I used an "Add a Circuit" fuse tap right at the fuse box. That nifty little device allows you to cleanly tap into a circuit the right way and avoid turning your truck into a camp fire.

 

How about some info on your truck ?

Do you want the power in the overhead console, or on top of the dash ?

 

I'm tapped into my 12v power outlet. I just ran the wires under the dash, through the a-pillar, and through the headliner. Easy job, takes all of 10 minutes.

 

But that would leave it on all the time ...

 

i have mine hardwired and it shuts off when i turn my truck off....it used to stay on but for some reason it doesnt anymore?

 

I want to have the radar detector mounted to the left of the rearview mirror. So I'm guessing it would be best to get power from the overhead console.

Overhead console :

White w/ Light blue stripe is hot in start / run position from fuse #18.

This is for the auto dimming mirror function.

This will make it so the detector is only on when the key is in the run position, the accessory position it will not be on.

 

Do you have any pictures. I'm still confused, where is the white wire your talking about? Do I have to remove the console with the two lights on the ceiling? How do I take that off? Sorry for all the questions.

 

The white w/ Light blue stripe wire is behind the console.

To remove the overhead console, open the rear compartment and grab the corners and pull down.

The overhead console is held in with 4 or 6 spring clips.

Once you have the console down, you will see the connector with the white w/ Light blue stripe wire in it. Use an inline splice ( T crimp connector or scotch-loc ) to power the detector.

The V-1 has the power connector for the direct wire "block". Just splice this in, and use the straight cord ( or coiled if you want to ) to connect it to the unit.

I made a curved bracket, which is using the visor mount screw to mount the holder on.

 

I used my radio circuit so that it would turn on and off with the truck. My hardwire kit had a remote too so that is why I ran the power all of the way down pillar and across the dash.

 

The simplest way is to get power from your mirror if it has power. I am running my RX65 off an Invisicord, in my Expd, and G35. IT took all of 5 minutes to hook up.
