HELP!! cruise control problem

I have a 02 screw- tried the cruise control-no luck, was working last time that i used it was yesterday. light will not come on in the dash. was wondering if it was a fuse or a relay. could it be the switches on the wheel that are bad?

p.s I have had the recall for the cruise done on my truck

Starting with checking the fuse for the CC is a good place.

Which recall did you have done, the 1st round, or the 2nd round ?

Also applies to the 02:

Most common failure (post recall) is that the switch on the master cylinder has finally failed. If it just "opened", then it is all that is needed. If it leaked and shorted, you'll also need a new fused harness. It's cheaper to just purchase a new recall kit. See your dealer's parts guy for the correct part number as there have been several revisions of the part number for the kit.

I have had the second recall done somtime within the last two years I dont rember when. It has done this back in Oct of this year and the next day it was working fine. I checked all the fuses etc w/ my Dad back then and they were fine. I havent had time to check anything w/ the Xmas holiday But when I change my oil tomorrow I will check again. My Uncle had a 98 and it did this same thing-he said that he cleaned his steering wheel switches with a can of that computer duster stuff. Blew out some trapped dirt- I wonder if that could be my problem?

Also there has been a LOT of rain in my area the last two days could that tell you anything?

Follow the instructions above first. Don't waste time speculating.

I too am having problems with cruise control. Is there a way to check the switch on the master cylinder with a continuity checker on a multimeter? Can I do the diagnostics as listed for a 2002 or is there a different procedure?
Thanks, ED

The CC test works for 97-03 MY trucks.

The quick test ( if the fuse in the harness has not blown already ) is to unplug the harness from the switch, and jumper the 2 pins in the end of it.
I did this waiting for my recall parts on my '01.
I used the blades out of an ATM fuse ( crushed it with pliers, and soldered 16 AWG wire to them and heat shrink the whole thing ) to make the jumper.

If you have already blown the fuse in the recall harness, you will need a new one 1st.

Keep in mind if you loose your brake lamps or the BPP ( Brake Pedal Position ) switch malfunctions while using the CC, tapping on the brake pedal will not turn off the setting. You need to manually press off on the CC switch.

Criuse

Looked at switch on top of master cylinder, leaking quite a bit. I guess harness is blown and switch is bad. Is the switch normally closed or normally open?
Thanks, ED

The switch is closed when the brake pedal is off.

125 PSI in the brake lines causes the switch to open, and the power from Fuse #13 to the Speed control Servo, removing voltage from the electric clutch in the servo.

This is why I suggested removing the connector, and jumpering it for testing. This has the power to the electric clutch all the time.

The CC test was added around 2000 or so.

It's only present if there is a CRUISE indicator in the cluster as best I remember.

Thanks for the correction, thought the cruise indicator was on the 97, but a quick check shows it is not on the cluster, per the owners manual.
