NEED HELP:1985 F150 with brake light issues
Brake lights dont work, replaced both bulbs and brake switch(stop light switch), wires seem fine, flashers, blinkers, tail lights all work. any ideas?
thanks
thanks
here is what the problem is... my son posted those remarks before things were totally looked at...
all lights up front work fine, flashers, blinkers, and parking lights
in the rear I have:
parking lights! thats it...
no brake lights, flashers, blinkers, or back up lights I have been under truck and chased wires (I have no meter) and havent found any broken or really badly rusted wires
I have replaced brake pedal switch and the brake lights, but obviously not getting any power to these lights dielectric grease did nothing but weatherize it...

Do you have instrument lights in the dash?
check to see if there is power to fuse #1 or switch it with a good one.
There should be a red/white wire going to the hazard flasher from the fuse panel, check it for power. Then from the flasher to the brake light switch the color changes to light green/red. You should have power at all of these, if you do then check all your grounds at the taillights.
Got that from my kid's hanes book for 85 Bronco.
I hate electrical problems.
You can get a multi-meter at radio shack for about $15, should be all you need.
Good Luck!

The fault is most likely in the turn/hazard switch. You can try jacking the hazard button in&out MANY times to try to clean the contacts, but you'll probably end up replacing it eventually. I'd get a MotorCraft part since the aftermarket ones aren't reliable, and usually require work to get the turn signals to function properly. Last I checked, the Ford part was ~$120.
But you might find a decent used steering column for ~1/2 that much. With just a little effort, you can use a column as new as '91, and there are a bunch in the JYs right now that got clunkered.
But the backup lights are totally separate from the hazard switch, so definitely check the grounds before spending any money. They could be on the bed behind the taillights, or on the frame in front of the bumper.
