Question Cant link to computer?

I have a 2000 F150 5.4.I started getting what feels like a shutter in the engine when trying to get on the gas, then O/D stopped working. So my mechanic tried to pull codes and the computer will not link. What next?

replace the fuse for the Cigar lighter / ODB connector, and try again.

Is there a CEL icon illuminated on the cluster ?

The OD switch, did you check the wires at the bottom of the gear shift lever. Some have a case to chaff at the bottom of the lever.

Cool No Computer Link

Yes I have 2 cig lighters and both work. In fact the scanner comes on but will not link for diagnostics also checked that wire last night in the steering and it seems really tight. That must be the O/D issue. But the computer has me stumped.

If the fuse is good, and the scanner will power up, I would say there is a problem with the scanner.

Is it a CAN bus only scanner, or will it do both ODB-II and CAN bus ? Never heard of that, but I have to ask the dumb question.

The error you are describing is when a ODB-II reader ( 96 to 03 ) is trying to be used on a CAN bus vehicle.

Newer scanners that support CAN also support the older "plain" OBDII communications. I've not heard of a "CAN-only" scanner.

Make certain that pin 16 of the test port is hot and that the ignition key is in the RUN position.
