99 F150 Starting issues

Hi all and I hope someone can help me here. I've got a intermittent starting problem with a 99 F150 4.6 AT 4X4. A couple of times a day when I go to start up I get this god aweful sound like bwaaaap. I'll let it sit for a few minutes until I hear a faint click. I can then turn the key and it starts normal. It's got a new alternator and Bosch starter that's only a few months old. I replaced the battery and it happened only once over the last couple of days vrs one to two times a day but it still happened. A side note, after changing the battery my stereo has no power to the after market head unit or amp, could this be part of the issue?

I need some help with this one.

Thanks for any help.

MK- probably have to try and explain the sound a little better. I have never heard a sound- bwaaaap. Where does the sound seem to come from?

Lol sorry, the sounds is from the starter trying to engage but it's very mechanical and loud. Makes everyone stop and stare like I'm killing the thing.

This starting issue happened twice today. The first time took two tries to get it to fire with a 3 min wait between. The second time after the first try I placed the tranny in neutral and tried, success it started. Could this be the PATS module?

Thanks all for any help.

Could be the neutral safety switch.

Well finally took it in to check the starter and I'm told the ring gear has missing teeth which prevents the starter from catching from time to time. $700.00 to replace. I'm having a friends uncle do it for a third of that next week.

Thanks for all the replies.
