stop light switch

I have a '99 Expedition, 5.4, Eddie Bauer with about 167,000 miles on it. I replaced the stop light switch and now I have a delimma. I can either put the car into gear OR I can, after manipulating the switch manually, have brake lights. Not both. As you all know, I need both to legally drive this vehicle. How can I have both? Any answers?

1. Did you replace it with the same switch ? This is the MY that the Shift interlock and the Brake on / off switch are the same circuit.

2. Did you check that the switch is in the same position with the same travel ?

I am a bit confused that the shift interlock works, but the none of the brake lamps work ( even the CHMSL ? ).

SSCULLY,
Thanks for your reply. I am guessing that it was the part. NOT genuine FORD part, although it looked exactly the same. I took the "guts" (the contacts) out of the new part and put them in the housing of the old part. Installed it. Everything works great. Hmmm, makes you wonder.

Could have been a plunger adjustment thing on the new one ??

Glad it is working now, in the future be careful with those off brand parts from your truck. I still pay the price for Ford parts on stuff like this, seems to work out better in the end.
Airfilters, oilfilters, and relays / fuses, that can be any mfgr. I even stick with the Ford trany filters.
