Dead engine

And i mean really dead.

Now it has happend to me 2 times.

My car is a F150 5,4 l. year 1998 with 115k miles on it.

When trying to start the engine, the starter do not engage. Weird I thought, and being in the traffic I turned on the hazard blink. Did not work either. Turned the key a couple of times but no reply. Also no light at all in the dashboard when the ignitionkey was i the on-position. There were no power at all.

Suddenly a ticking sound like a rattle snake from somewhere around the stearing wheel - could be the hazardblink relay. Then it stopped. Then a ticking sound every one second - for sure from the fuse box placed under the dash in the left hand side. This also stopped but still no power at all. for a periode of maybe 15 minutes the cliking sound was repeated several times. But still no power.

Tryed to disconnect the cable to the battery +. Then reconnected the cable. turned the ignitionkey and got power but only for a short while. It disapeared again before getting the engine running.

Again disconnected the cable to the battery. Put it back on. Turned the key, and the pick fired up.

Now i have had 2 days without any problems. But off course the problem is not solved.

Anybody got suggestions on this issue.
Thanks

Have you checked the nuts on the starter motor relay on the firewall ?

You moved those cables around, and the truck seems to be OK, and that is the only thing I see straight away that would have to do with moving the battery cable, and intermittent functions.

There should be 3 cables under 1 on the relay.
The + terminal cable is a Y from the battery, 1 side of the Y goes to the starter motor and the other side of the Y to the starter motor relay.
From that lug with 3 cables, it feeds the mega fuse for the generator, and the mega fuse for the PDB ( Power Distribution box, under hood fuse panel ).

That seems like a good place to start, maybe others will have some other ideas.
