Bad alternator right after replaced battery

I just had a new battery installed in my '01 supercrew a few days ago and then yesterday the battery/charging light came on. Took it into the dealer today and they said my alternator was bad and replaced under an extended warranty for $100. I can't help but wonder if the alternator going out is just a coincidence, or if it's somehow related to the new battery going in. Any thoughts?

Alternator might have been over worked keeping up with a dying battery.

A dying battery will put a strain on the altenator, but a new battery will not harm it.

Thanks for the replies. I figured that the old battery would cause extra work for the alternator - just seemed very coincidental so wanted to get some more opinions.
