I got confirmation that they were in fact pins, not lights. So a word of warning when removing the cluster. Some of the gauge pins may be loose so be careful. Also be aware that when you remove some of the dash parts there are rubber grommets (mine were white) that may pop loose and disappear into the dash. I lost two and hope it won't rattle too much!

Thanks to Greg, girlwithtruck, and all others that have added to this thread. I have had my truck for 7 years without a problem. It sat for the past 15 months while I was in Iraq. Upon return, I noticed the odometer problem and a stuck/broken heater control switch. With a couple hours of work both problems were fixed. I removed the solder and replaced it on the eight connections, and replaced the environmental control switch with a used one that works great. You guys/gals saved me a lot of money and time.

I found mine comes back, lately alot, but since the alternator was changed, it stays on all the time, or it seems to. If it doesn't, I'll go back and re solder it. Having done this a few times, it is very easy and works well. A note to those attempting for the first time, read this thread religiously to pick up alot of small tips along the way. The best for me is avoid dropping the screws and have a magnet handy!!!!!!!!!

 

I was replacing my heater core, and I repaired my flaky odometer, while I was at it. Very simple repair! The heater core, on the other hand was a big job! To top it all off, I found the instructions for the heater core replacement after I got home tonight on this forum! They would have been nice to have 36 hours ago! Anyway, Thanks for posting the odometer fix!

 

1999 - speedo reado zero when cold/at start of day, then reads 30mph when going 60. Odometer is ok - no lag. Any hints?

Here we are with a six year newer model and I am having the same problem.

 

I'll be a ****; since I bought my 2000 XLT 4x4 s-cab I've lived with that odo going out then back on at random. Previous owner said, "Huh? Never noticed "that" before." (w/e) I decided to sell the truck now but recently came across this thread and thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try. Sure enough, that was the problem. Under a magnifying glass, found two of the solder points cracked. Re-did them both and it works like a champ. One less thing to have to worry about for potential buyer. Also, since I had cluster out, cleaned plastic inside and out, removing scratches put on over the years and dusting the insert. Looks much nicer. Thanks a mil to Greg and to all who've contributed to this and the many other maintenance fixes, providing true value to these forums.

 

yup... did this fix yesterday afternoon and it's workin so far! I didn't have a magnifying glass or anything, but when i held the board up in just the right light i could see at least the one end solder joint was cracked. It might help to have a florescent work light or something to get close to really light things up when you're lookin for the bad joint. Hopefully it keeps working and i won't have to do it again, but if I do it will be much easier and smoother now that I know what to expect.

circuit board totally different, but still LCD display and no cracks on solder joints.

I went last night and picked up the '99 F-150 that I'd bought over the weekend. I noticed on the hour and a half drive home that the digital odometer was suddenly gone. I was like, "WTF?" A few miles down the road, it came back on again. Today, it was on and off numerous times. I know that the previous owner had to have known about it, but failed to mention it to me.

I'm glad that it's something that I can fix myself.

Just signed up. Wanted to get on the band wagon also and let you know that my 1999 Expedition is doing the same thing. It will be great not having to go to the Ford Garage and shelling out more money. From now on I will consult this Forum before I go to the Dealership. Thanks much.

I wanted to relay my thanks for the detailed instructions. I have a 99 F-150 which I recieved when my dad passed away. He bought it brand new and kept it in great condition. The only problem was the odometer. It was out for over three years and because of you I was able to fix the problem quickly. Thank You for all the great info.
