Hid relay question

How do I wire my HIDs directly to my battery using a relay and can they use the stock headlight switch still?
thanks

Do the instructions tell you that you need a relay ?

Which kit type do you have ?

No trigger, lights are turned on by applying power to the ballasts

Trigger built into system, uses a male headlamp bulb plug ( pigtails ) to connect to factory headlamp wiring

What are the problems you see if you dont use a relay for HID's?

Think I found out the answer to that

If this is still what you are working on ( which would have been good to include in the 1st post ), just pull the 2 DRL relays in the aux relay box under the hood.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...elay-w-drl.jpg

Your owners manual should list these as R03 and R202 on page 280 of your owners manual ( confirm this with your OM ).

This will shut the DRLs off.

The other thing you can do to clean up the install, is remove the DRL resistor from next to the Driver's side headlamp.
This will have a black 2 pin connector attached to it.

I was just wondering because i put my HID's in and i have no problems and i didnt use a relay.

But also i dont have high beams which i think plays a big part into the equation.

Samething on moy motorcycle i dont have a relay on them and they been working for 2 yrs now. So i didnt know if there was a huge reason why. But maybe the high beams require more power.

i dont have DRLs on my truck.
I have a single beam kit from ebay
and when i have them both installed they both turn on then one flickers and turns off.

Being its from ebay..it could be a defective unit?
You could try to put a relay in the line and see if it clears it up

But from my experience in 2 different installs- mine both worked and no relay needed?

I see you have a sound system installed? you could be pulling alot of power and not enough to keep your HID's running- this is where a relay would help you to keep a strong voltage to it.

well, thats what i thought at first, but i returned it and had brand new parts sent out.
how would i install the relay? and would i wire the hids directly to the battery, or still use the stock wiring?

What do you want the relay to do ?

If the ballast are attached directly to the battery now ( via a fuse ) adding a relay is not going to change anything.

How about some help with this, do you have a mfgr web site or directions online that we can see ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_4315wt_964
thats the kit i bought from eBay.
i remember getting directions with it, but they were the most basic of directions, and they weren't specifically for the f150, they didn't help at all. and the technical support didn't know what to do either.

Ok, how about

1. What do you want the relay to do ?

2. Which type above does it look like ?

rex4mayor 04-07-2009 03:59 PM

I just want my HIDs to work, and it seems like the only way i can get that to work is if i wire them directly to my battery using a relay.
my kit looks like those first 4 pictures on the page.

First 4 ??
There are only 2 pictures in this thread ( aside from the aux relay box picture which is for the truck )

Not sure what you think a relay is going to do for you if the ballast are already wired to the battery ( via a fuse I hope ) now.

rex4mayor 04-07-2009 04:16 PM

Oh, i thought you were talking about the ebay page.
my HIDs arent already wired to the battery
thats what im trying to accomplish with the relay

SSCULLY 04-07-2009 04:23 PM

Where are they getting power from then ?

Please don't say the factory headlamp connector...
