1992 F-150 Wont Start

My sons 1992 F-150 4.9 V-6 won't start, he told me his starter has been acting funny it will not always crank when he tries it, we took off the starter and trekked to Advance Auto they tested it and said it was fine, the counter jockey said the problem sounded like a switch on the columm that attachs to the clutch by the fire wall (I don't remember the name of the swith) it clips on and has some electrical leads to it so we bought it and replaced it that made things worse before the truck would start with the key now the only way it will start is by jumping the starter relay with a wrench, it cranks just fine when we do that, but will not crank with the key, we even put the old switch back on and it still will not crank. I'm leaning towards some sort of ignition issue now, we did get a starter relay from LKQ (Junk Yard) it made no difference it still will not start, any help would be greatly appreciated.

first off the 4.9 is an inline 6 not v6

and did you replace the relay on the starter or the one on the fender? sounds like it could be the tumbler switch, the fender mounted relay or the starter actuator possibly broke

92 wont start

Ok Sorry inline 6, we replaced the fender mounted relay, my son called me and said that he drove the truck over to his friends house and he and somebody else somehow bypassed the switch that we replaced under the dash and now the truck starts with the key so maybe the replaced switch under the dashboard is defective and the old one was going out in the first place.
