positive cable broken at starter

Hello Everyone, can I put a splice of some kind on my cable since it broke off at the connecter at the starter,or do I need to replace the whole positive cable? Both seem difficult to do,which would be easier to do in your opinion, thank you very much in advance,SHAKEY

replace the whole cable. you don't want the splice to break on you in the middle of nowhere.

it is really not that hard just follow the same path of the stock one and it is one bolt on the starter and then at the battery.

Replacing it is going to be easier. To splice it, you would need to remove it, and get the correct size underground splice kit, and install it, and a high press crimper is not a cheap crimper to buy for single use.

The set screw ones you would not want to try to use with vibration.

Napa or the likes should have a replacement cable for your truck.

Thanks, forgot to mention 99 f-150 super cab 4.6.Is napa same quality cable as Ford or does it matter?Yes it would be hard to crimp that cable, but cable removal doesn't seem that easy either, seems to branch off in two spots two feet from battery post, can't see where it goes.I'll pick up a cable and give it a try,Thanks. SSCULLY sent you a message.

For something like a battery cable, I would say they are the same. Heck with a cable Autozone / partsplus might be the same quality also. It is wire and crimps.

Online Ford parts dealer shows 2 different cables for 99 w/ 4.6L, 2WD and 4WD.

2WD is MSRP $45.35 / cost $32.38
4WD is MSRP $46.64 / cost $27.75

That gives you a starting point.

www.southwestfordparts.com in TX Parts get to me in 2 days usually with std UPS ground ship.

whether you replace the cable or not, replace the nut and washers on the solenoid post with items made of copper. The orginal connector corroded due to a bi-metalic reaction with the copper post, non-copper nut/washers that were used.

I was having an intermittent starting issue with my truck. I just got the truck and noticed that someone had replaced the battery terminals, alternator and battery. After checking the connection at the starter I discovered the thing was just sitting against the starter connection. The entire terminal was corroded and fell right off the positive cable when I undid the solenoid nut. I went to Auto Zone and got a universal cable, ran it right along the originals, zip tied the new cable to the old one and cut off the ends of the original cable. To get that cable out of the loom and everything looks to be a pain and just wasn't worth the hassle. I hope this cures my intermittent no start problem!!!
