"Ambient Interior Lighting"

I thought I would pose a question for you guys. I have seen a few new vehicles
with an "ambient interior lighting" option. It seems that the option is dim blue
lighting that lights up the front floor where your feet generally rest. I have seen
this in the new Ford Edge and also as a dealer installed option on the 2009
Dodge Ram (Genuine Mopar Accessory). Does anyone think it's a waste, kinda
neat and upscale, ricey, or what? Maybe it would be useful instead of having
to turn on the dome light to see something on the floor? I dunno.....what do
you guys think? I'd like to get an opinion before I set out to get the wife a new
vehicle because she was interested in the Ford Edge.
Thanks

That project took a back seat to others on my '06, but my '01 I installed 4 LED bulk head lights ( similar to the LED license plate bolts if you have seen those ).
http://www.signaldynamics.com/produc.../indicator.asp

1 in each kick panel pointing in, and 2 under the dash pointing down by the transmission hump ( console shorter in that MY ).

These were on a switch on the dash, so if I dropped something I could flip the switch, and see the floor, without lighting up the whole cab of the truck.

I am looking at the White LED step lights this time. I should be able to mount them to the side of the flow through console, up under the dash, and should give enough light. These are just starting thoughts, have not done it yet.

I don't drive around with these on, got enough light emitting from the GPS or blackberry in the pro mount on the dash, don't need to add to it.

Ford actually has an accessory in there catalog for this:

Interior Light Kit
Part Number: 8S4Z-13E700-AA

Accentuate the mood when you inject the 1st- and 2nd-row footwells, plus the front cupholders, with intriguing LED illumination. At the press of a button, you can change out the look on the go: Lighting is color-configurable in 7 hues – red, yellow, green, blue, aqua, purple or white. Dealer installation recommended.

Fits:
Ford F-150 2009 2008

I got these kinda deals in the Freightliner I drive, red only and it's a factory option. Plenty of truck (heavy truck) places surely have these kits or know where to get them. I like it because it gives a small bit of light that for some reason makes me less tired???? I do miss it when it's not there. I wouldn't mind doing this myself especially if the kit shown ^ comes with different colors.

I had installed it on my Marauder, got it cheap from a buddy of mine who works for Ford. It fits anything, not just F-150's, 'Stangs, or Focus'. It took me all of 45 mintues to hide everything and get it all mounted. Here's a few pics:

I mounted my switch on the side of my console gauge pod.
