Cruise Control Repir Thoughts

I am the original owner of a 2000 Ford F150 4x4. I did have the deactivation switch replaced under recall about 3 or 4 years ago. Ever since then the cruise control has been intermittent in it's engagement. It works fine when I I get lucky, the light comes on and the cruise will deactivate, reactivate, coast, and accel without issue. I have replaced the deactivation switch a 2nd time, jumpered the deactivation switch plug with a wire for many months and run the cruise control self-test procedure succesfully. All above have not cured this intermittant problem. I was thinking of replacing the clocking spring, but my horn works fine and I have no airbag light. I now believe the on/off switch of the cruise control system is intermittantly not working and am thinking of replacing it. Does any one have any other thoughts?

I would take a look at the clocking spring. hen I bought my f150, the cruise did not work, when teh delaer checked it out, they found that the spring had been damaged in an air bag deployment. The horn worked, with no air bag light. They rep0laced the spring, and had no more isues.

Before replacing stuff, try the CC test procedure ( in a few threads here ):

There is a self test in the cruise control system.
With the key off depress and hold the cruise control off button while turning the ignition to the run position, don't start the truck, the cruise light will flash once to let you know it is in self test.
Five additional flashes indicate a bad cruise control servo

Release the cruise off switch and within 5 seconds depress the other switches in sequence:
1. on
2. resume
3. coast
4. set/ accel
The speed control light will flash as each switch is depressed.

If the last one does not flash it may then flash a code

After this the cruise will move the throttle to test the actuator and the cable.
Make sure the throttle returns to idle and turn the key off.

Because you have an intermittent problem, I would try it a few times, and if you can think of the wheel direction when you have the problem ( straight, slightly cantered left or right ) put the wheel in that direction when you run the test.

Mine is doing the same thing. last time it happened I tried the horn. It didn't work. They both share the same ground. Food for thought......

PS. No I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Too cold

Cruise Control - Inop

2001 F150 V6 Manual Trans. 4WD

My cruise control worked fine for the first 100k. First, it started to malfunction intermittently; it would take multiple attempts with the "set" button to engage. Now it will not engage at all.

1. When I'm at speed, press the "On" button and then the "Set" button, the cruise light comes on but only for an instant. The cruise control does not engage.

2. When I go through the self test described by SSCULLY, everything goes well until I get to the set/acc button. There I don't see the "cruise" light blink.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks for the help.

AJM

Do you get a flash code ?

If not, I would think bad switch in the steering wheel if you did not get a flash code. kind of difficult thing to check, need to pull the airbag to check that.

Steve or JMC might have a better idea.

I just purchased a used 2000 F150. Fire hazard repair has been done on the cruise control but it is not working. I tried the self test but the cruise control light will not come on at all. I do not know where the cruise control light is located. Are there multiple fuses or relays to check

Check owner's manual.

Is the switch mount leaking fluid ?

Sounds like the fuse in the recall harness is blown.

I looked at the harness connected to the master cylinder and dont see a fuse. I also unpluged the harness at the connector and noticed very bad corrosion. Looks like the corrosion was there before the harness was replaced and they did not replace the female plug. Can I eliminate the plug and install butt connectors there instead.

The fuse is inline with the recall harness, if you have the newest version of the recall. Might be covered in tape, the recall info says it is not replaceable ( the 2nd version might have had the line ATM fuse ).

If you unplug the harness from the brake switch, and jumper the end of the harness, this would verify operation.

I broke apart an ATM fuse, and soldered the wire to the blades for the fuse slot. These were the correct size pins needed.

DISCLAIMER : If you do this, and have a problem with your brake lamps while using the cruise control, pressing the brake will not disconnect it, you will need to manually press the off button.

Actually, the SCDS is a redundant disconnect after the brake lamp switch. It supposed to open when significant pressure is applied to the brake pedal.

I might not have been clear, the functioning stop lamps would disconnect the CC, if the BPP ( Brake Pedal Position ) switch had a problem, and 125 PSI ( think that is the correct value ) of pressure is applied, the SCDS would shut of the CC.

When I unplug the harness where they join together the female side looks like it has been overheated. I guess just from age. It is even cracked a little. I am afraid that if I try to jumper I may damage that side. Can I cut off both connectors and install a new male and female connector. If so do they need to be some type of fire proof plastic. Or even better can I get a new female connector.
Also take a look at this link and let me know if this is a good idea. This is a diagram for a 1995. Is it the same for the 2000.
