train horn wiring
train horn wiring
i've got a question or two... i've had my train horns on my truck for like almost a year now, and my cousin n i hooked it up to a push-button underneath my dash. now i'm trying to figure out how to hook it up to my steering wheel. i'm curious as to what all i need to do. i have a on/off/on switch and a on/off switch(which i'll use for the compressor) and right now i believe the train horns work by grounding them whenever i hit the button. so how can i wire it to work with my steering wheel, but still have the ability to use the factory horns? thanks, mitch.
done
ok so after searching around on some forums, i found what wire i needed... so w/ my brother, a wire tester thingy.., and a few horn honks later, found the wire. wired it all up, but now my steering wheel is really touchy.. like i could almost just blow on it and it'll go off... and for some reason this morning my bro said he was driving and all of a sudden the regular horn went off. he said he put the switch to the off position but it still went off, so he cut the horn wire n its good now. any ideas as to why that would happen? yesterday when i wired it, it worked perfectly. and when the switch was in the off position nothing would happen. train horns now go off w/ the panic button too,
muhahaha... so, anyone got any suggestions?

steering wheel?
ok, so today my train horns went off when i flipped the switch up, so i was messing with the steering wheel and kinda squeezed it so the button/pressure switch thing would pop out kinda... then it worked fine. anyone know of anyway that i could make the steering wheel less sensitive? cause i think right now the switch in the steering wheel gets stuck. this hasnt ever happened before, until i wired the train horns to it just recently..
any ideas?

Where did you place the switches and what wires did you cut?
A simple Toggle switch spliced into the ground side of the horn wire would have allowed you to toggle between the truck horn and the Train horn.
See pic:

Cut the truck horn ground wire and connect the ground side to the middle terminal, connect the truck horn side that you cut to the left terminal and connect the train horn ground wire to the right terminal. Toggle right and the truck horn sounds and to the left the train horn sounds. This assumes that the train horn circuit is closed by grounding the circuit. Loose the train horn button as this method will eliminate it. You will be using the steering wheel button to sound both horns.
