Help total electric failure

I have an 04 f-150 scab that has so far been problem free.
I went to back out of drive way this evening and when I put it into drive and went to back up everything shut shut off. I put it back into park and tried to restart and nothing would happen but I could hear the fuel pump trying to run. I thought maybe the battery was dead but it show 12.62 volts on my meter. I tried to hook up a charger to it and start it that way and nothing but clicking sounds. I had been driving the truck all day so to suddenly have the battery die seems very strange unless my alternator went out today.
Any help you could give me would be great.

Why were you trying to back up in drive?

Kidding aside, what engine do you have? And did any warning lights come on?

does the engine turn over (spins) but doesnt actually run?

Just because the battery meaures 12 volts at the terminals doesn't always indicate it has enough power to turn the truck over & start it. You really need to put a load on it to test it. It very well could have a dead cell. Try swapping another battery in there. Or, take your battery out and bring it down to one of your local auto parts places who can test it for free!
