Help a guy with his power window conversion?
Help a guy with his power window conversion?
1998 F150 XL. I want to put power windows in it but i want it to be to O.E. specs. I Know how to remove and install the regulators and all that and i found some replacement original window lift motors. I also found some power window regulators that match my truck brand new on Ebay. Now all i need is to find the wiring harness for the motors which i can't seem to find anywhere. I saw a thread somewhere already about someone else wanting to do this without aftermarket stuff but there weren't any answers in the thread. Any suggestions? TIA
The harness will be a challenge, as the one from the factory contains more then just the power windows in them.
You can look up the harness, and buy part to make one yourself to add to the truck, which would be close to factory. None of these are going to be exactly what you need, but should contain the parts needed to build one.

The big challenge will be when you get to the fuse block. The connector for the wiring harnesses might not be complete, and the fuse block positions might be empty.
Might be better served by getting a good harness from a bone yard at least the door end, and making the remainder your self inside the truck to the fused power.
Interesting part is going to be the connection to the GEM for the OTD function, this could prove pointless.

Thanks for the guides those can be hard to find sometimes. As for the GEM connection, i'm fairly sure that the GEM i have is faulty now...as of the other day i've got no wipers, dome lights, or door chimes. If that comes to need replacing couldn't i just find one that was made for my truck that came stock with power windows? If thats not possible i could just skip the OTD function and wire the motors into a switched power line. This is going to be a fun project...lol
It is not a question of is it in the GEM, it is, the question is the connector to the GEM on the back side of the cab fuse panel, if the connectors are built with the wiring in them.
BTW : Window down and OTD are both functions of the GEM for the driver's side, that is why I said get the door harness, and build the remainder yourself with add-a-fuses ( Walmart I have been told, Napas by me carry the crap push in add a fuses now ).
Take a look at my "old" album #3 and search on 100 ( the EVTM cell is 100, and the diagrams are 100-1 to 100-5 .

I have done this conversion, and must say, complete OEM is pain in the ***. My xl fuse box wasn't correct, the wiring harness costs $200 new, running that harness involves removing the dash, etc. I used OE door panels, switches, regulators, and motors, but ran superior wiring, superior relays, and wired a window roll down module. I might also note the window roll down module only cost ten bucks, gives me the option to roll both windows down with one touch, and roll both windows up when I set my alarm. I ran the wiring through the hole already in the firewall, taped it nicely, and made little box to house all relays under the hood. Some people will tell you that you just need the harness and plug it in, but I have figured out the hard way that an XLT without PW/PL/PM/FOG LIGHTS will have the wires/fuse box for this, but an XL WILL NOT!!! An XLT will have wires for adding a keypad entry, an XL WILL NOT!!! If you go to v6f150.com there is a guy who did a OEM upgrade, but had to change fuse block, and underdash wiring. That being said, look at this:

Please note, this does not have the PW/PL/PM harness, but is everything else you would need for an OEM upgrade.

Thanks guys! Trust me I know what you mean when you say taking apart the dash is a PITA... I'm about to take my dash apart again to give it a new paint job so while i'm there I figured I could do some upgrades. So if i'm understanding you correctly I can go to the salvage yard near my house that has a 97 xlt and basically pull everything out of the doors (power locks and windows...i dont care about the mirrors) and the wiring harness complete with the GEM and fuse panel and shove it in mine? Of course i would also have to find the extra relays/fuses for under the hood (if any.) I also heard something about copying the info on my GEM and putting it on the one I am going to put in but I dont think that would work if I am going from a basic GEM to one that supports power stuff. Am I right?
Oh and @ noonespecial, I contacted the guy on ebay and he said that is the power windows/locks/mirrors/fog lights harness...i'm waiting on a reply to if it has the complete fuse box/GEM cause if it does..its a steal for a dollar and exactlywhat I need!

No, you can see the fuse box in the picture, and the plug that goes through the firewall. I think maybe he mistook you for me, because I asked if he had the pw/pl/pm harness, and he wanted me to give him $75 for it. The one in the pic is for everything ELSE under the dash, minus the data connector. I might have confused you too, as I am talking about two different harnesses. One for the DIFFERENT fuse box that just happens to cover everything else, and a seperate one that plugs into the fuse box, and into the drivers and pass. kick panels, then into the door.
Go to the yard, and get ready to pull that dash. One harness runs through it, and has connectors for radio,a/c,light switch, and goes to fuse box, it is really fat. The one I am talking about runs kind've above everything, and against the firewall, then drops down on the pass. side, with half running to the kick panel, and the other half running to the door. You can pull the round oval plastic from the top of the dash and look at the top of the firewall and you will see that bugger. On the drivers side, you'll have to remove the E-brake assembly, and this harness will run down from the firewall with "three" halfs, one to the fuse box, one to the drivers side kick panel, and then one through the boot and into the door. If you do it how I did, you can just cut through the boots on each door, and take out the parts in the doors, which will have all the connectors you need. I do not think the GEM has anything to do with the price of rice in china, unless you want keyless entry, and keypad entry.

Ok yeah I saw where it said it was missing the data connector but I wasn't sure what that was. The way he answered my question was that the harness in the picture was the one I needed. I was under the impression that I only needed one harness to connect everything. I would assume though that even though there are two separate harnesses I would still need that one on ebay since I would not be able to connect it to the harness that I have right now. Cant hurt to buy it anyway since its going for only $1!
Hey fellas. Stumbled upon this while doing the OEM conversion in my '02 XL. Insnsprtn, how did yours turnout?
And noonespecial, are you saying that in order to do this conversion, you have to change both the harness that runs along the firewall AND the fat one that runs to the fuse box? I changed the skinny harness along the firewall, but didn't realize I needed a new fuse box till now.
And yes, I know this thread is 4 years old, but it's pretty applicable to what I'm doing right now.
