Oil gage problems?

While i am at idle, it seems to be at the right spot but when i accelerate it jumps around a lot. it is a new engine with less than like 20k miles on it. but my odometer isnt working so i didnt know if maybe it is just a messed up gage or if i have a problem with the engine. do these gages act up frequently or is it probably an engine problem? the engine doesnt seem to change at all when the gage moves and at times it will drop all the way down for a good 30 seconds and then jump back up to normal and then it will end up bouncing around again. so is there a sensor i should find and look at or something? Please let me know what you think. Thanks

Hopefully someone can confirm this, but I thought the '97 was the same as the 99-03 MY trucks, and this is a gauge version of an idiot light ( i.e. it only reads nothing and correct level ).

I woudl check for a loose connection between the sending unit, and the harness on the truck ( if I recall correctly ).

thats what i was thinking and being that my odometer is broken also, i thought it might have a problem also.

Im gonna pull it out this weekend and try and figure out the odometer problem and while i am at it, im gonna look at the oil gage also. plus im gonna change the oil so hopefully i will find the problem. Thanks
