Driving home tonight in my 98 F150 (4.6) and noticed dash lights were dim. Then all of a sudden had a major electrical failure (radio, dash lights, all gages, fan motor all out). Idiot lights for air bag and ABS on and a warning chime going off. Truck began running very rough and eventually died. Tried to restart - just groaned a little and then nothing. Waited 20 min and then barely got it restarted. Barely got it home. 2 hours later truck started right up, but after 2 min of idleing in driveway began seeing problems. Dash lights died, radio died, etc until most electrical items dead. Headlights always worked.

Bad alternator, bad ignition switch, something else???

Any info much appreciated. Thanks.

Start with basics:

1) Load test battery
2) Clean terminals
3) Test battery cables
4) Test charging system
