Driver side Window Switches

Ok, I have a 2001 Super Crew and I am having problems with the window switches. At first the problem was that the some of the windows would go down but wouldn't go up. This was the case until you pushed real hard and then it would go up. That lasted about once or twice then stopped.

It looked like my wife had spilled a little coffee or something so figured that it was dirty. I took the switch apart and cleaned and scraped until I was getting good connections everywhere. Put it all back together and it still didn't work right.

I took the switch apart again and noticed that the plastic nubbs on the bottom of the buttons looked melted. These are the nubbs that push on the switch to make the proper connections to roll up or down. So I took something sharp and pushed one of the switches manually. Sure enough, a little spark and a poof of smoke. It is like I have a short somewhere and it is only getting hot enough to melt the plastic nubbs. Now the nubs on the buttons are to short to push down on anything. I am surprised that it hasn’t blown a fuse.

Have any of you heard of this? I looked in the door area to see if I could find a pinched wire or something, but nothing. I am not sure where to go from here.

Ideas?

Wow.

Nothing at all? I was really hoping this was a common problem. Figures, I never get those. I guess I will have to start digging a little deeper.

I was thinking the same thing, 40.00 for a new switch, and no more playign around with a switch that has been taken apart.

I only took it apart to clean it because it looked like my wife had spilled coffee on it. No since in buying a new one because of a little coffee. That is when I saw the real problem.

I would agree, but I don't think the switch is what is messed up. Well...it is now, but I don't think it is the cause of the problem. When you engage the switch, it sparks and smokes. It is getting hot and melting the buttons.

I guess I could buy a new switch...I am going to have to anyway because it is ruined now. Plug it in and see if the problem is the same. If so, unplug it before it gets ruined and look for the real problem. That would at least eliminate one possibility. Hopefully it will fix it, but looking at the workings of the switch it is not likely.

I was just hoping someone else had the same problem and could say..."OH, that is just the XXXXX and all you have to do is....."

No, right now I just have some tape over it to remind me not to push the buttons. Just replaced the speakers up front and had the door panel off. I thought that I may have pinched one of the door lock wires when I put it back together. So I took off the door panel again the other day, but couldn't find anything. Everything looked fine.

Maybe it is just bad switches. I am going to buy new ones and see if that fixes it.
