Power Window Magic Fix?
Power Window Magic Fix?
I just wanted to post how I fixed my driver's side window that was stuck up in my '98 F-150 since I used information from this forum I found useful. My window stuck in the up position all of a sudden one day. When I'd try to lower it, I just heard the relay under the dash clicking. When I'd try to raise it, the lights would dim slightly, so I figured it was getting juice. I took the door apart and checked the wires with my ohm meter - up was getting voltage, but down was not - hmmm? I thought maybe the relay was bad and since it was a simple fix tried replacing both 4 & 5 with no success. Drilled holes at the dimples in the door to get the motor out (do NOT try to drill out the rivets holding in the motor) and removed the motor. Tried the motor on the passenger side and it worked! So, the problem was reduced to the switch. I took the switch out and noticed you can take it apart to see the metal microswitches under the plastic. I fiddle with those a bit, just checking them out and when I put it together gave it one last try before going to get hosed by the dealer for a new switch and it was working again! So, if you are having similar issues with one window, clean all the connections and see if you get lucky enough like me to get it working again.
I have spent hours pouring over the schematics & testing cause my p'side window controls gradually deteriorated - first drivers switch would put it down but not up.
Then p/side switch would only put it down and not up. So I disconneced the switching altogether and jumpered the motor - up & down all day - great.
I have bench tested the p/side switch probably 10 times - always SEEMED to work fine.
Following the example - I gently dismantled the switch and cleaned the actual contacts INSIDE the switch..
---- and they're tiny - and I'm NOT.. so tools go in places BIG fingers can't.
I cleaned the contacts.. maybee 2 minutes work.. and 5 more for RE & RE inside door skin & reattaching motor leads.
AND it works again... WooHoo... (2 years no p/side window open/close.)
Ford wanted $85 just to test........and the GEM module concept was mentioned at several hundred dollars...PsHAAAW
